Ten Business Ideas for Kids - Friday Free for All

This week’s freebie was brought to my attention by Treece, mother of 2 teen girls who have created a huge business selling pre-wrap. Thanks Treece (and thanks for the tip on my ring today too!)

For those who don’t know what pre-wrap is here’s one explanation that Treece gives on her Kids-In-Biz blog:

Pre-wrap is a velvety soft foam that comes in rolls like tape. It’s really an athletic pre-taping product used to wrap over an injury before tape is applied, but many female athletes have found it makes the perfect headband! It’s clingy and doesn’t slip off your head like regular headbands.

I must say that watching Treece and the success of her girls has me really itching to pull the entrepreneur out of my boys someday. I’ve tried (albeit not too hard) with Zach once before but I don’t think I found the right motivation for him and besides he’s only 10 and right now video games and playing with his buddies is more important to him and I’m ok with that. We still have plenty of time! ;)

Anyway, I’m looking for ideas to help get him at least thinking in the direction of what he might like to do when he grows up. Don’t get me wrong he wants to do things that absolutely amaze me sometimes (for instance be a archaeologist), but I think he would really enjoy running his own business because of comments he’s made to me in the past and more importantly his strong desire to do things out of the ordinary. So, when I came upon the post from Treece with a link to this guide, I thought I’d check it out and wanted to pass it on to those of you who have kids that might be interested in starting their own business.

It’s never too early to start encouraging your kids to think about business. You can actually start the conversation really young. For example, when you see a cool toy commercial on TV ask your child if he thinks the toy will really work like that when he gets it home. Who hasn’t been disappointed about a toy when it doesn’t fly or dance or look as good as it does on TV? Marketing is one of the first concepts to teach because it’s so much fun. Even kids need to know they are being “sold to.”

I must say I agree, Treece. Kids tend to enjoy marketing and who wouldn’t when it’s all about toys and food at that age? ;)

It’s also a great way to help them with money matters because once you teach them the marketing side of things they won’t be as quick to spend that money like it’s growing on trees.
