Making healthy food choices are essential to a healthy lifestyle. With a little bit of attention, you can choose the proper foods that will enhance your health.
Vegetables, fruits, and grains are normally low in fat and have no cholesterol. Most are great sources of dietary fiber, complex carbs, and vitamins. The American Heart Association recommends that you eat foods that are high in complex carbs and fiber.
Here are some tips for making healthy food choices:
Coconut is high in saturated fat, and olives are high in monounsaturated fats and calories. It is wise to use these items sparingly to avoid getting too many calories from fat.
Quite often you are tempted to add saturated fats or cholesterol to vegetable grains when cooked. A great alternative is to use olive oil instead of regular oil or butter. Another example is to use egg yolks in your bread as well as pastas.
Processed, canned, or preserved vegetables may also contain added sodium. With some people, too much sodium (salt) may lead to high blood pressure. There are some food companies that are actually canning vegetables with less salt. You can look for these in the market area or choose fresh and even frozen vegetables.
Nuts and seeds are another alternative, some however may be high in fat but the fat tends to be the healthy kind which is monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Some nuts are higher in fats than others and should be eaten in moderation such as macadamian nuts.
Another great choice are foods that are high in soluble fiber. Some examples include oat bran, oatmeal, beans, peas, rice bran, barley, and even apple pulp.
When looking for healthy food choices, be sure to read the nutrition labels or information about the food. You are then able to determine what the food contains and how healthy it truly is for your body. By taking some time and making your healthy food choices wisely, you’ll have a lifetime to enjoy the foods that will take care of you.
